Biscayne Bay and Robert is Here!!!

Got up early to leave Grassy Key heading to Biscayne National Park where we are scheduled for a bout to tour.  There was a big event having on the keys north of us which was predicted to cause quite a traffic jam.   We were gone by 8 am and sad to leave the beautiful Grassy Key Resort.  Since the gift shop at Everglades National Park was closed when we there last time, we stopped by on the way to get our hiking stick medallions and some postcards.  Also stopped at Robert is Here Fruit Stand. Last time we passed, it was packed and no where to park.  Since we were early got a parking spot!  We loved it and stocked up on fruits, veggies,  dried ginger for the boat trip for Kevin and Robert’s book about how the fruit stand got started and his family story. Had Robert sign it for me.

Made great time to Homestead and happy to see designated RV parking spots. Got there early enough to go, get our passport stamps, pay for our boat tour and head back to the rig for lunch.

Biscayne National Park is a located in southern Florida, south of Miami. The park preserves Biscayne Key and its offshore barrier reefs. Ninety-five percent of the park is water, and the shore of the bay is the location of an extensive mangrove forest. The park covers 172,971 acres (69,999 ha) and includes Elliott Key, the park’s largest island and first of the true Florida Keys, formed from fossilized coral reef. The islands farther north in the park are transitional islands of coral and sand. After the boat trip, we headed off to our spot for the night in South Miami. Very nice park right in the middle of a neighborhood – Larry and Penny Thompson’s Memorial Park and Campground. Lawrence “Larry” Thompson was an American humor columnist and newspaper reporter for 28 years with The Miami Herald, until his death in 1973. In the office they had a a binder with all of his articles in page protectors with stories of his travels in his RV. Would have loved to have the time to read it all. We had a great spot and ate at our picnic table outside. Realized we needed to add picnic tablecloth holders to our grocery list 🙂

Tomorrow is Miami Beach!

Loving our big adventure!

  1. It looked like a fun boat trip. I’m a lighthouse nut, so I would have loved to see the Boca Chita Light and cross that off my list of lighthouses to visit.

    1. We too love lighthouses and now you just gave me another idea for another list 🙂 Just what I need ; )
