Record Day for Passport Stamps – 4 in One Day!!!

We left bright and early from Sugar Mills Travel Park in New Smyrna Beach and headed to Saint Augustine to meet my friend Tobi! Our 1st stamp was at Fort Matanzas National Monument where we watched the movie and took photos. We did not take the free boat ride 🙁  since it was going to take over an hour and wanted to get going.

Driving into St Augustine, we ignored Randi (our Rand McNally RV GPS) since we could tell exactly where we wanted to be and figured we knew better.  Well, we got on an old bridge leading into the historic downtown and all of a sudden Randi started telling us the weight of our vehicle was over the allowed limit for the bridge – YIKES.  I did not breathe until we got off on the other side and lesson learned.

Our 2nd stamp of the day was at Fort Castillo San Marcos and Tobi met me outside while Kevin was taking photos.   It is so much fun to meet someone live who you feel like you know from Facebook.

A tour guide was showing a bunch of kids around the fort and she was saying back 80 years the city allowed some of the walls of the fort to be torn down for a 9 hole golf course.  She said one of her favorite photos was of her great grandmother in a floor length skirt and blouse holding a golf club on the fort grounds.  Needless to say, the golf course is gone.

We left St. Augustine headed for Jacksonville and the Timuicuan Ecological and Historical Preserve, which is located at Fort Caroline National Memorial and we knew it was going to be tight as they closed at 5 pm.  Our GPS had us arriving at 4:48.  We really wanted to make it in time since this was 2 stamps at one location.  We walked up to the door of the Visitors Center at 4:51 and the door was locked and we were crushed.   A ranger came around the side of the building and we asked why it was closed. Apparently the Visitor Center closed at 4:45 and the gate leading in closes at 5.  We  must have looked heartbroken and she opened back up and let us in, so we could get out stamps. She was so nice and also spent a great deal of time telling us about the preserve and the Fort.  Whew 🙂

Got a spot for the night at the Lake City Campground and heading tomorrow to Ft Walton Beach to meet Simone, one of the great coaches on my team.  We will soon be done with Florida and have loved every moment.

On the road again,

Judi
